A Real Down-to-Earth Kind of God

God and humanity are One, in our Lord Jesus Christ.

"The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." --John 1:14

Have you ever heard anyone say - or perhaps even thought to yourself...

"Almighty God does not matter to me: He is in the clouds. To be of any use to me, He must come down to the domain in which I live; and I do not live in the clouds but on the earth."

God, in essence, cannot come anywhere near us. The doctrine of incarnation is that God did come down into our domain. The wisdom of God, the Word of God, the exact expression of God, was manifest in the flesh. Jesus Christ is God-Man. That is the great doctrine of the New Testament - dust and deity made one. The pure gold of deity is of no use to us unless it is amalgamated in the right alloy - the pure divine working on the basis of the pure human: God and humanity are One, in our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is only one God to the Christian, and His name is Jesus Christ, and in Him we see mirrored what the human race will be like on the basis of redemption - a perfect oneness between God and man. Jesus Christ has the power of reproducing Himself by regeneration, the power of introducing into us His own heredity, so that dust and deity again become one.

The tremendous revelation of Christianity is not the fatherhood of God, but the babyhood of God -- God became the weakest thing in His own creation, and in flesh and blood He levered it back to where it was intended to be. No one helped Him; it was done absolutely by God manifest in human flesh. God has undertaken not only to repair the damage, but in Jesus Christ the human race is put in a better condition than when it was originally designed. It is necessary to understand these things if you are to be able to battle for your faith.

Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh, not a being with two personalities. He is the Son of God (the exact expression of Almighty God) and the Son of Man (the presentation of God's normal man). As the Son of God, He reveals what God is like; as the Son of Man, He mirrors what the human race will be like on the basis of redemption - a perfect oneness between God and man.

Jesus Christ was born into this world, not from it. He came into history from the outside of history; He did not evolve out of history. Our Lord's birth was an advent. He did not come from the human race; He came into it from above. Jesus Christ is not the best human being. He is a being who cannot be accounted for by the human race at all. He is God incarnate, not man becoming God, but God coming into human flesh, coming into it from the outside. His life is the highest and the holiest entering in at the lowliest door. Our Lord entered history by the Virgin Mary.

The LORD your God is in your midst... he will rejoice over you with gladness... he will exult over you with loud singing.

Zephaniah 3:17
